What is asbestos?

Asbestos is the generic term for a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals. Despite the danger of Asbestos being known about since the early 1900s, it was widely used in a large number of industries. The first medical article on the hazards of asbestos dust appeared in the British Medical Journal in 1924, yet asbestos continued to be used up until 1999, and it is not just a problem of the past, most buildings constructed before the 1980s are still likely to contain Asbestos.
